[Hall of Fame] Idris Elba

Idris Elba as Stringer Bell

Idris Elba as "Stringer Bell"

For serious?

With deep regret, we place Idris Elba in the “24 Hours to Midnight: The Blog!” Hall of Fame. Elba is a British television/theatre/film actor who is probably best known for his portrayal of Stringer Bell on the brilliant HBO series “The Wire”.

HOWever, Elba has managed to take starring roles in the requisite three “24 Hours to Midnight” film entries (The Unborn, Prom Night, and Obsessed aka “Oh No She Didn’t”). AND he’s in Hilary Swank pseudo-religious clunker “The Reaping”, which we haven’t gotten around to reviewing yet. His Rotten Tomatoes rating (an average rating of all of the films an actor has starred in) is a dismal 11%.

How does this kind of thing happen?

It was weird enough for me when I realized the guy’s actually British… which might actually explain why he’s been getting the short end of the stick when it comes to American film roles. You know, if you take a good look at The Wire, there are a surprising number of Brits, or expats in there (Clarke Peters was in Notting Hill, I can only assume he was living there at the time when they were shooting/casting.) I mean, Idris managed to land a spot in Rocknrolla, which might not have been huge, but has infinite potential for growth.

Speaking of Englishmen – I thought Dominic West’s delivery was a little marble-mouthed at times, but I didn’t realize he was English until it was pointed out to me. Also, I couldn’t pick out a Baltimore accent if you paid me.
